What's New at User Friendly Computers? The past year has been a very busy one for User Friendly Computers. My customer client base continues to grow exponentially. I am now offering data backup services and security auditing services for my clients. I also have several spare systems that I keep on hand to loan out to customers who need a demo unit, or loaner machine while they await repairs on their regular equipment. These units are already pre-loaded with Microsoft Windows XP and Open Office, so they are quick to setup and get people back up and running again. About the Cat LogoPeople often ask me about where the cat on the monitor logo
came
from. That is my orange tabby named Jupiter, laying on top of my
previous
monitor. What is it about cats and computer monitors? I guess he liked
the warmth it gave off. But he used to lay up there and
supervise me while I worked at my main workstation.
Unfortunately for Jupiter I had to upgrade to a newer LCD monitor. The
old CRT gave up the ghost. The
shallow depth of my new 24" Dell LCD monitor makes it impossible for
Jupiter to
lay on top of it. Just as well, because he would probably break it if
he did. He weighs more than 20 pounds. He is a big kitty. Being at a total loss for a company logo, my wife suggested I
take a picture of the cat on the monitor and put it up on the website.
After some work in Photo Shop to remove the
background clutter and some retouching, I soon had
a cat on a monitor suitable for a business logo. While LCD monitors are
now out-selling CRT monitors and they definitely represent progress, I
think
Jupiter would prefer the older electronic warmth of a bygone era. Future PlansI hope to upload more pictures of the computers I build for my clients to the web site (done). See the custom built computer page to the left. I also want to post more hardware and software reviews both from myself and from my fellow hardware fanatics and friends here at UFC. How about it guys, I'm still waiting. I also hope to drag out the Linux PC more often from the closet and start working on learning more about Linux. I believe that Linux is here to stay, but until more client applications are ported to Linux, I expect that it will remain a niche product.
