Gender is a social term used to define our roles in society.  We use language to "call a name," and establish gender norms (gender "roles") within society.  But this social construction "pins" us -- we are labeled, categorized, and dominated by them.  This can't happen, however, without our cooperation. 

Yet Butler explains that even when we rebel against these roles, we do so "... drawing from that construction to articulate its opposition."  Even when we act in opposing ways, we can only do so within the confines of the established social norms.

Our agreement and cooperation within society is something we do prereflectively based on ideas and skills learned in childhood.
