The Black Art

Paul Gilroy begins his article with darkness.  He tells us that "the idea of a narrow anti-racism ... is no longer tenable."  He explains why this has not come about; he sets his scene with dark images of "mud" and "noxious features."  This is how he describes the politics of race in England these days.

The bleak deficiencies of organized anti-racism is compared with Salman Rushdie's The Satanic VersesCurrent racist trends are explaining race in terms of cultural differences rather than biological hierarchy.  The fact that this is being addressed and dealt with, however, is only enough effort to push for more.  He seems to see only the dark side of these feeble attempts.  Is there no hope for those who are born black and British?
